How to Feed Red Worms

Many people decide to raise red worms for various reasons, such as to use them for fishing bait or to maintain a compost system. Red worms can grow in areas that are room temperature, or between 55 and 75 degrees. The most important thing is to feed the red worms the right food. It's also important to make sure that you never overfeed the worms, which could lead to death of the worms or attract unwanted bugs to the compost.

Instructions

    • 1

Create bedding in your worm container that can also be used as food. Coconut coir (the fiber from the outer husk of a coconut), peat moss, and shredded cardboard work well as bedding for the red worms.

    • 2

Feed the red worms a mixture of grass clippings, leaves, and animal manure regularly. The red worms will prefer to eat organic biodegradable material before any other kitchen scraps that you might give them.

    • 3

Use small pieces of any kind of fruits or vegetables to feed the worms. You can also feed small portions of table scraps. These provide a lot of nutrients, especially for younger worms. Such food will also help to keep the bin smelling slightly fresher.

Grind food waste for even more nutrients for the red worms or if you just want to get rid of more of your leftovers. For example, eggshells can be pulverized and pizza crust can be broken down in water so that worms will be able to eat the food.

Keep the bin moist with water, but never add too much. Try squeezing a handful of bedding to check for moistness if you're not sure.
