Tips on How to Repel Flies

Flies are common insects that carry bacteria and viruses which may cause diseases. Many natural and technical methods exist to repel flies. An appropriate method should be chosen after considering the advantages of all available techniques, as well as you personal preferences.
  1. Keep the Surroundings Clean

    • Repel flies naturally by avoiding things they like. Keep all food items covered and remove waste from your surroundings without any delay. This makes the environment clean and keeps the flies away. This is a natural and environment friendly method. Ensure that the bottom of the trash can is cleaned properly. Even after removing the waste from the trash cans, the liquid leaked from the trash may still be at the bottom, and can result in a smelly mess which attracts flies.

    Use Natural Methods

    • Some of the commonly used natural herbs that repel flies are basil, bay leaves, lavender, mint, rosemary, sweet woodruff and tansy. Most of these herbs release sweet fragrance which is an added advantage. Also allow spiders inside the house as they eat flies. Use citronella candles and pine scents.

    Screens and Nets

    • Make use of window and door screens. Physical barriers like tents and nets repel flies physically from entering inside. This method becomes effective only if the doors and windows are closed immediately after opening.

    Hang Homemade Fly Paper

    • Prepare a homemade fly paper and hang it. Take brown paper bag and cut it into 4-inch long strips. Mix ¼ cup corn syrup and ½ cup sugar in a bowl and spread a layer of the mixture on the strips using a knife. Hang this fly paper in the required area. It attracts the flies and keeps them away from entering inside.
