How to Take Care of a Bumblebee

Bumblebees are large, fuzzy insects that can be identified by the black and yellow stripes that cover their bodies. Bumblebees typically live in colonies with a queen bumblebee. A grounded bumblebee may be sick, injured, too old or too cold to fly away. If the bumblebee is simply too cold to fly, it can usually be saved. It might even be a queen bumblebee, which is very important to her colony. If the thorax of the bumblebee is at a temperature below 30 degrees Celsius, it won't be able to fly until it warms up.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the bumblebee up, using a small box.

    • 2

Place the bumblebee in a warm spot, such as a safe place outside where the sun is shining.

    • 3

Mix honey and water into a solution that is 30 percent honey and 70 percent water.

    • 4

Place a drop of the solution within reach of the bumblebee. Be careful not to get any of the solution on the bumblebee's body. If you bring the bumblebee into your home, put it inside a large container that has holes to let air inside. Keep drops of the honey and water solution within reach of the bumblebee.

    • 5

Release the bumblebee outside if it begins to fly. If it is a queen, her safe return will be important to her colony.
