What is an ectoparasitic pest?

Ectoparasitic pests feed on blood, tissue, or other fluids from the surface of the body of their host organisms, without entering their bodies. Common ectoparasitic pests include fleas, lice, ticks, mites, and mosquitoes. These pests have specialized mouthparts that enable them to pierce the skin or other protective barriers of their hosts to access blood or other body fluids.

Ectoparasitic pests are often vectors for diseases, such as malaria, Lyme disease, and typhus. They can also cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and discomfort in their hosts. Management of ectoparasitic pests typically involves the use of pesticides, repellents, physical barriers, and other pest control strategies to prevent or reduce their infestations and the associated health risks.
