What do spiny anteaters eat?
Spiny anteaters are specialized in eating ants, termites and other social insects. They do this by using their highly specialized tongue and palate, which are covered with tiny backward-pointing spines. These spines help them grip and scrape up the insects they eat, and their long, sticky tongue allows them to reach deep into the nests and crevices where the insects hide. Spiny anteaters also have a thick, muscular stomach that can process the hard exoskeletons of the insects they consume. Spiny anteaters are known to feed on a wide variety of ant and termite species, as well as other insects such as beetles, cockroaches, and grasshoppers. They may also occasionally feed on fruits and other plant material, but their diet is primarily insectivorous.
