How to Set Up an Anole Cage

For apartments or other locations where space is a consideration, traditional pets, such as cats and dogs, may not always be practical. In such cases, an anole lizard makes a fairly low-maintenance pet once you set up the anole cage. When setting up an anole cage, keep a few things in mind: temperature, humidity, basking areas and hiding locations. All of the can be arranged in a small tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a cage for your anole home. Since anole lizards are small, two can live comfortably together in a 10-gallon aquarium enclosure with a lid.

    • 2

Place substrate on the bottom of the anole cage. Substrates, such as potting soil, aspen or cedar mulch are good choices as they help hold humidity. Adding a layer of moss will also add to the humidity and offer hiding places for the anole.

    • 3

Provide enough heat for your anole. A basking light can be a good choice for heating. You may need to experiment with the bulb wattage to reach the recommended 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Provide ample humidity for your anole. Placing a 50-watt aquarium heater in a jar of water inside of the cage will provide both warmth and humidity.

    • 5

Decorate your anole's cage. Place branches, plants and stones in the cage to provide ample climbing areas for your anole. Rocks and terraces will provide basking areas.
