How to Make a Styrofoam Incubator for Bearded Dragons

Bearded dragons are prolific breeders, and incubating their eggs is relatively easy. A Styrofoam container provides the perfect incubation environment if temperatures and humidity remain constant. Female bearded dragons dig holes and bury their eggs, so it's important to provide your bearded dragon with an appropriate site to lay its eggs. After it has laid its eggs, dig them up and place them in your Styrofoam incubator.

Instructions

Fill the Styrofoam container with enough vermiculite to cover approximately two-thirds of each egg. The vermiculite helps keep the humidity levels high in the incubator, but eggs that are completely covered may mold or become too moist to produce healthy hatchlings.

    • 2

Place a heating pad underneath the container or a heat lamp above it. The ideal incubation temperature for bearded dragon eggs is 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature does not remain constant, the eggs might die. Attaching a thermostat to a heating pad helps prevent rapid temperature changes.

Mist the vermiculite several times each day to keep it moist. Humidity levels should be between 70 and 80 percent in the incubator. Check the humidity gauge every few hours to ensure that humidity levels have not fallen.

Place a lid with holes in it on top of the container. The lid will help keep the humidity and temperature stable, but the babies will need to be able to breathe when they hatch.
