How Do You Introduce Male & Female Bearded Dragons?

Pogonas are a type of lizard that are more commonly known as bearded dragons. They are most commonly found in the bushes, boulders and trees of rocky, arid, semi-desert regions in Australia. Bearded dragons are docile and friendly toward humans, especially when they reach adulthood. Introducing male and female bearded dragons is generally done for mating purposes only. Bearded dragons aren't social animals and prefer to be left in solitude. Adding an additional bearded dragon often leads to violence as they fight for control of the enclosure.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the male and female in separate enclosures for at least 90 days. This time serves as a quarantine period to ensure that each bearded dragon is healthy before introducing them.

    • 2

Monitor the bearded dragons while quarantined. Drops in normal activity level or failure to eat are signs you should be watching for. On the other end of the spectrum, increased food intake and activity level is a sign that they are ready for breeding.

    • 3

Introduce the male to the female's enclosure. This will keep the female more comfortable. In the wild, males seek out the female to mate with. Keeping the female in her own enclosure and introducing the male is closer to the natural way of mating for the bearded dragon.

    • 4

Allow the male to approach the female and allow for copulation. Copulation is sometimes a violent and vigorous process.

    • 5

Remove the male from the female's enclosure once copulation has finished. Failure to remove the male could result in violent fighting between the two bearded dragons.
