How to Feed a Leopard Gecko Spiders

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are carnivorous lizards native to the Middle East. In the wild, leopard geckos feed on a wide variety of prey including other lizards, insects, scorpions and spiders. Their distinct color pattern along with their ease of care make them a popular reptile pet. In captivity, leopard geckos are generally fed easy-to-cultivate insects such as crickets and wax worms. However, you can easily supplement your leopard geckos' diet by capturing and offering any unwanted nonvenomous spiders found in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Chase an unwanted nonvenomous house spider onto a flat surface away from walls or corners using a pencil.

    • 2

Trap the spider by swiftly placing the cup over it with a fluid motion. Some spiders, such as wolf spiders, are very fast and can be difficult to trap if you are not quick enough with the cup.

    • 3

Slide the sheet of paper under the cup taking care to not allow too much space between the cup and the ground so the spider can not escape.

    • 4

Hold the paper firmly against the bottom of the cup and transport the spider to your leopard gecko's cage.

    • 5

Open the cage, place the cup and paper inside, remove the paper to release the spider and withdraw the cup. Leopard geckos are nocturnal reptiles and may not pay any attention to the spider during the day. Leopard geckos will eventually eat the live spider; geckos typically will not eat dead spiders.
