How to Feed Cornmeal to Mealworms

Raising your own mealworms to feed to your reptile or other small pet will save you the hassle of going to the pet store every few days to buy mealworms. It will also help ensure that your reptile is fed a nutritious meal, as mealworms from the pet store are not gut loaded and have very little nutritional value. Gut loading mealworms involves feeding the mealworms a healthy diet before feeding them to your reptile. Cornmeal is one of the foods you can feed mealworms, along with powdered milk and thinly sliced vegetables. Many people use it as a substrate as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase any cornmeal from the grocery store. No specific brand is better than another brand.

    • 2

Pour the cornmeal into the bin that you use to house the mealworms. Fill the bin to about two inches deep with cornmeal.

    • 3

Clean the bin every two weeks by removing the worms with a sifter and throwing out the old cornmeal. If you are breeding the mealworms, save the old bedding and mealworm droppings in a separate bin until the eggs hatch. Then you can sift out the worms and throw out the used cornmeal.
