How to Use a Reptile Light Clamp

Reptiles are a unique and fun animal to have in your home. Taking care of them is simple, but they do require a few things to keep them happy and healthy. UVB lamps are very important for your reptile's well-being. They will sit and bask under the lamp to absorb UVB light, which helps them produce vitamin D in their bodies. This helps their bones grow correctly. Having a secondary source of UVB light is important with pet reptiles, as indoor sun is not enough to meet their UVB light requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your terrarium for your reptile's specific needs.

    • 2

Determine where your reptile will bask inside the terrarium. Place a rock for your reptile to rest on. Put a screen over the terrarium for protection.

    • 3

Write on a piece of tape the date you are installing the new light bulb. Stick the paper on the side of the lamp for your records.

    • 4

Position the aluminum clamp lamp with a 10.0 UVB light bulb installed above the reptile basking area. If you are using a new light bulb, you must allow about two weeks of "burn-in" time where the bulb is at its most powerful. Do this by placing the lamp 16 to 18 inches above the basking area.

Reposition the lamp to about 14 to 16 inches over the basking area once the two-week burn-in time is over. Replace the light bulb once every six months for optimal performance.
