Types of Enclosures
-
Chameleons are typically purchased when they are between six and eight weeks old, and it is only while they are relatively young, up to four months, that they can be housed in a glass aquarium. However, 20 gallons is just short of enough space; a young chameleon needs a 25 to 35 gallon aquarium. After this, the chameleon will need an enclosure that is screened as well as larger.
Proper Habitat
-
A chameleon needs their enclosure to closely resemble their natural habitat. Live plants, a UVA/UVB light, which you can purchase at a reptile-friendly pet store, and a water bottle to mist your lizard all help to contribute to recreating the wild.
Possible Health Risks
-
Another important reason to switch from an aquarium to a screened enclosure when your chameleon gets older is that, not only can the reflections in the glass confuse and startle your pet, a lack of air flow can result in serious upper respiratory infections. Screened enclosures allow for much greater air flow and are thus better for the health of chameleons.
