Preparation
-
When feeding true fire skinks, it is important to take caution as their bite can cause a lot of discomfort, especially for children. Males should be kept in separate cages, as they are aggressive toward one another. True fire skinks cannot swim, so spritz it with water instead of trying to bathe it.
Feeding Habits
-
Skinks, like humans, are omnivorous and should have a diet that is varied and offers multiple forms of nutrition. You should feed your true fire skink in a cage that keeps a warm, humid temperature with a heating lamp for basking and a shallow water bowl. It is also important to give your pet skink calcium supplements, which you sprinkle onto their food.
Fruits/ Vegetables
-
Some fruits and vegetables true fire skinks will eat are greens (like collard greens, lettuce or kale), carrots, berries, squash or zucchini. Sometimes skinks are picky and will prefer live food.
Proteins
-
Insects, such as crickets, locusts and worms are good protein for true fire skinks. Some adults will eat pinky mice, as well as eggs and other small lizards. Some owners opt to feed their true fire skink low-fat dog or cat food.
How Often to Feed Them
-
For a young, growing true fire skink, feed at least once a day, sometimes more. Adults will eat about three to four times a week, depending on size and appetite.
