Leopard Geckos & Shedding

Shedding is a common occurrence among reptiles wherein the outer layer of skin is sloughed off as a fresh vibrant looking skin emerges from beneath.
  1. Frequency

    • The leopard gecko may shed as often as once every two weeks.

    Appearance

    • The gecko's skin becomes dull as it nears shedding. The skin will look almost white just before shedding begins.

    Helping

    • Raise the humidity in the gecko's enclosure during shedding to ease the process. Do this by raising the temperature slightly and placing a shallow dish of warm water in the tank.

    Aftercare

    • Once the leopard gecko has shed, make sure all the shed skin has come off the lizard. If the shed is incomplete, raise the humidity more and offer a shallow dish of warm water for your pet to soak in.

    Fun Fact

    • The leopard gecko is known to ingest its shed skin, which happens to be rich in vitamins.
