Chameleon Basics
-
Chameleons are cold blooded animals. They rely on the air temperature in order to regulate body heat. Temperatures that are too cold will result in the interruption of critical biological functions.
Temperature
-
Chameleons are native to warm areas with high humidity. They require nighttime temperatures between 67 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ideal Heat Sources
-
Night heat sources for chameleon should not emit white light. The best choices are ceramic heaters specifically designed for reptiles or a red heat lamp.
Ceramic Heaters
-
Ceramic heaters fit into any standard heat lamp fixture. They do not emit light so they can be used at night as well as during the day. These heaters should hang 12 to 24 inches away from the top of the chameleon's enclosure.
Red Bulb Heat Lamps
-
Heat lamps with a red bulb are suitable for night heat for chameleons. These lamps emit red light which chameleons cannot see. These are sometimes called brooder lamps. Place this heat source 12 to 24 inches away from the cage enclosure.
Warning
-
Heat lamps can cause fire or burns if not used with care. Never use a heat bulb in a regular light fixture. Prevent your chameleon from coming into direct contact with any heat source.
