How to Splint an Iguana's Leg

Finding your iguana with a broken leg is distressing for any owner. Having it occur after the reptile vet office is closed can be even more worrisome. Diagnosing the type of fracture and determining the best method for splinting needs to be done by a qualified reptile veterinarian for the leg to heal properly. However, if your iguana is moving around and likely to cause more damage to the fractured leg, you may want to apply a temporary splint until you can take him to your vet.

Instructions

    • 1

Have one person restrain the iguana safely. The person restraining should hold the head behind the jaw with one hand and the base of the tail with the other hand.

    • 2

Have another person wrap a towel around the body to restrain the uninjured legs. A towel covering the eyes may help calm the iguana.

    • 3

Cut a strip of gauze to a length that will wrap around the leg about three times. Wrap this gauze strip around the length of the leg bone that is fractured.

    • 4

Cut the Popsicle stick or Q-tip to fit the length of the fractured leg bone and not extend beyond the joints. Place the splint on top of the gauze.

    • 5

Wrap another strip of gauze over the stick, going around the leg once or twice.

    • 6

Wrap a couple layers of first-aid tape to keep the splint in place. Be sure to wrap it securely but not so tight as to cut off circulation.

    • 7

Call your reptile veterinarian as soon as you can to make an appointment. Your vet will likely apply a different splint and place the leg in a particular form depending on the type and location of the fracture.
