Madagascar Day Gecko Habitat

In order to keep a Madagascar Day Gecko healthy and happy, owners must provide them with a proper habitat. The best way to do this is to create a habitat that closely mimics their native region. Some basic necessities are temperature-controlled caging and substrate.
  1. Natural Habitat

    • Madagascar Day Geckos are from eastern and northern Madagascar, off the coast of Africa. They live in trees and are active during the day.

    Cage

    • These geckos need a large, tall cage so they can climb and move around freely. They should be housed in glass or plastic terrariums to help maintain the high humidity they require.

    Substrate

    • Newspaper, paper towels or orchid bark can be used on the bottom of the cage.

    Furniture

    • They will need a lot of branches on which to climb. Real or fake plants can be used to provide hiding places.

    Temperature and Lighting

    • Madagascar Day Geckos should have one end of their cage maintained at 65 degrees F to 70 degrees F and the other end at 85 degrees F to 90 degrees F. Maintain the proper temperatures with heat lamps and heating pads under the tank. These geckos also need full-spectrum lighting during the day.

    Humidity

    • Since they are from a humid environment, the geckos also will need a humid captive habitat. Humidity should be kept at 60 percent to 90 percent. This can be done with regular misting or leaving wet rags in a bowl in the cage.
