Ideas for an Iguana Cage

Iguanas make excellent pets, and they bond to their owners with the proper care taken. The most important part about caring for an iguana is its cage and habitat. They require special care pertaining to their cages that can't be neglected, as it could result in the deterioration of the iguana's health.

  1. Material

    • There are many different materials available for cages ranging from glass to acrylic to mesh. The most suitable material for an iguana cage would be mesh as it allows the air to be able to flow through the cage, allowing the iguana to breathe easily and resulting in a happier and healthier pet. Acrylic and glass tanks tend to hold in bacteria such as salmonella, which is absorbed from the animals waste.

    Substrate

    • The substrate you choose for your iguana habitat is equally as important as the type of cage your iguana is in. For instance, pine substrate is not a good idea for any reptile as it contains toxins that are harmful to them. It is also a good idea to avoid fine substrates like sawdust and sand. Iguanas like to touch their tongues to everything, so using large chunks of cedar wood is perfect for an iguana cage.

    Decor

    • Decor should be fitting to the iguana's natural habitat and shouldn't include any bright, neonlike colors. Iguanas, like many reptiles, are prone to seizures due to flashing, neon lights. Definitely include plenty of lush greenery, both artificial and natural. Include natural herbs in little pots in their cage. Iguanas love mint, chives and catnip.
