How to Make a Tunnel in an Aquarium for Lizards

Lizards love to hide in tunnels in their aquarium, especially when they are sleeping or scared. Adding fixtures like tunnels to your lizards' aquarium can make them more interesting to watch as well. You can easily add tunnels with very little expense, or possibly even use cage fixtures you already have on hand.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor knife
  • PVC at least 2 inches in diameter
  • PVC elbows, two for each tunnel
  • Clean cloth
  • PVC primer
  • PVC adhesive glue
  • Play sand or reptile sand

Instructions

    • 1

With the razor knife, cut the PVC pipe the length you want the tunnel to be, keeping the ends straight and removing any burrs. Keep in mind the length or width of your aquarium (depending on the direction you want to lay the tunnel). Also, consider that the lizards need to be able to escape from both ends of the PVC easily.

    • 2

Use your clean cloth to remove any dust or particles from the PVC ends and the elbows before applying the primer.

    • 3

Apply your PVC primer to one end of your PVC pipe and one of your elbows, just covering the area where the pipe and elbow will fit together.

    • 4

Apply your PVC adhesive glue immediately after applying the primer to the end of the PVC pipe and to the elbow where you will connect it to the pipe.

    • 5

Press the PVC pipe and the elbow together and twist about 90 degrees to help spread the glue evenly.

    • 6

Hold the pieces together for several seconds to let the glue set. Repeat the steps to apply the second elbow to the other end of the PVC pipe, taking care that after twisting the elbows both openings point upward.

Cover the completed PVC pipe with the play sand in the aquarium, leaving the elbow openings exposed so the lizards can use the tunnels.
