Choosing a Lizard
Consider the level of commitment you are willing to make. Some lizards live more than 20 years. Be prepared for a long-term relationship with your new pet.
Ask yourself what type of a lizard diet you're comfortable with. Some lizards eat mostly vegetables while others prefer a live meal. That means crickets, mealworms and maybe even mice.
Visit a couple stores without buying. Ask questions and write down the names of the specific species you're interested in.
Research the little guys yourself. Pet stores that don't specialize in reptiles aren't always clear on important differences between species. Search online or read books about the type of lizard you want to buy. Learn their temperature needs, water and humidity requirements, dietary needs, eventual size of the lizard, the equipment needed, life span and personality of the reptile.
Make your choice. Pick the lizard that best suits your needs and caretaking abilities.
Buying a Lizard
Find a knowledgeable pet store to purchase your lizard. Buy from someone able to help you in the future if your lizard has any problems.
Buy the necessary equipment before buying the lizard and set it up. It's much easier on you and your pet if their new home is ready when you walk in the door.
Ask if the animal was bred in captivity or if it was caught in the wild. Captive-born reptiles are less afraid of humans and have suffered less stress than those taken from the wild. They are also less likely to carry diseases.
Buy your lizard and take it home.
How to Buy a Pet Lizard
