The Difference Between a Blood Red & a Red Bearded Dragon

Bearded dragons are technically several species of lizard, but the type most often pressed into service as companion animals is the central ̵1; or inland -- bearded dragon. According to Tom Mazorlig, author of ̶0;Bearded Dragons,̶1; the central bearded dragon is one of the most frequently kept and bred of all lizards. Bearded dragons come in a range of colors, including red, gold, tiger and snow. Among the red dragons are variations ̵1; from pale red to deep blood red. The only difference between a red bearded dragon and a blood red bearded dragon is the color.
  1. Red Bearded Dragons

    • Although red bearded dragons appear in the wild, breeders cultivate the color to make designer versions much as breeders cultivate specific breeds of dogs or cats. Red is the most common of the designer dragons, says Mazorlig. The head is usually a dark orangey-red with a deep red flush to the rest of the body. The top spines of the dragon may be orange or red with the spaces in between them colored grey or purplish.

    Blood Red Dragons

    • Many red bearded dragons sold only have the barest hint of red to them, but blood red dragons are especially intense in coloration. The entire body appears quite red, rather than washed with color. A blood red dragon will have red nails and its eyes will also appear reddish, while red bearded dragons will not have these features.

    Selection

    • Males usually show the color best, but females can also be quite vibrant. You cannot always tell if a bearded dragon will appear red or blood red when it is a hatchling. You should look at the parents to get a better idea of what your pet will look like when mature. Most hatchlings look very similar, regardless of future coloring.

    Cost and Care

    • Because they are less commonly found and are so dramatic in appearance, blood red dragons are one of the most expensive varieties you can find. Although they are a hardy animal, adjusting to a new space can be stressful on your dragon. Before adopting any type of bearded dragon, ensure you have an enclosure ready that provides warmth and security. Research feeding needs and other accessories that will help your dragon adapt to its new home.
