How to Make Lizard Cages Out of Wire

Building lizard cages out of wire is a simple, inexpensive way to create a custom habitat specially designed for the type of lizard you are keeping. The size of the cage will be determined by the adult size of the lizard being housed. Smaller lizards such as geckos only require about 2 cubic feet of space per inhabitant. Larger lizards such as green iguanas can grow to as much as 2 feet long in the first year, and will require a significantly larger enclosure. An all-wire lizard cage can be constructed without any specials tools in a very short amount of time, and filled with plants, perches and other items designed to mimic the lizard̵7;s natural environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the galvanized steel wire out on the ground. Measure and cut a length of wire to 57 inches long, keeping the 4-foot width intact. Use wire cutters and wear heavy-duty gloves to protect your fingers.

    • 2

Place a plant saucer on the ground. Roll the cage wire into a 4-foot-tall tube that fits snugly inside the plant saucer.

    • 3

Secure the tube with six zip-ties, fastening the top and bottom first. Evenly space the remaining four zip-ties to ensure a tight closure.

    • 4

Place one end of the tube inside a plant saucer. Run a bead of silicone caulk all the way around the joint from the inside of the cage. Use a liberal amount to ensure a tight seal and to cover any sharp edges. Allow the caulk to dry before continuing.

    • 5

Place the tube where you want to keep your lizard. Fill the tube with plants, perches and a water dish.

    • 6

Place a plastic plant saucer over the top of the tube and secure it using two bungee cords attached in a crisscross fashion.
