Chameleons
-
The chameleon is one of the best known varieties of lizard and one of the most popular choices among pet lizards. Perhaps the reason for their popularity is their ability to change color in order to camouflage themselves. Chameleons are also characterized by eyes that move independently of one another and very long tongues. They are carnivorous and feed on a variety of insects, such as crickets, and other small prey.
Geckos
-
Geckos are a smaller variety of lizard and their small size makes them an attractive choice of pet for those with small living quarters. There are several varieties of geckos. Two of the most popular pet varieties are the crested gecko and the leopard gecko. Crested geckos range in size between 8 inches and 17 inches while leopard geckos are much smaller, growing no longer than 8 inches. Crested geckos are omnivores, meaning that they eat both plants and animals. Leopard geckos eat insects.
Iguanas
-
Iguanas are another popular pet; however, their size means that iguana owners must be prepared for a more high-maintenance pet. The green iguana has several interesting physical traits including three sets of eyelids, a forked tongue and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. While iguanas are herbivores, caution should be taken when near the mouth to avoid cuts which can be quite severe. Iguanas are also known for their extremely long tails. The tail of an iguana is often many times the length of its body. The tail can be used for balance, for aid in swimming or in defense of the iguana against predators.
Bearded Dragons
-
Bearded dragons are known to be easier to care for than many other types of lizards. Their natural habitat is the desert climate, making them a robust variety of lizard. Despite their strength, bearded dragons have friendly dispositions and thus make excellent pets. Associated with their docile nature are the physical traits that make bearded dragons so popular. These lizards frequently make hand and arm gestures which resemble human hand-waving as well as a bobbing of the head.
