Instructions
Check Housing Conditions Closely
Find a pet store that houses mice in clean cages, preferably glass or plastic with good bedding.
Notice if the cage has plenty of water, food and toys. A well-cared-for mouse thrives in this environment.
Ask if the mouse has been fed a variety of foods, such as supplements along with its regular meal. This ensures a balanced diet.
Smell the cage area for ammonia. If the odor is strong, this might indicate poor ventilation or lack of clean bedding. Males' urine does smell stronger than females.
Make sure the males and females have been kept apart. You don't want any surprises from the female once you have her home.
Check the Condition of the Mouse Closely
Ask how old the mouse is before buying. Females should be 5 weeks old while males 4.
Look at the eyes to make sure they are clear and bright.
Hold the mouse to see the condition of its coat, tail and feet. The mouse should be clean and its coat shinny, and it shouldn't bite you.
Notice if the mouse is scratching itself. This could be a sign of parasites.
Watch the activity level. A healthy mouse will be energetic and lively.
Choose a Pet Mouse
Determine if you want one or more than one mouse.
Remember a male and female together will breed.
2 females will make a better combination than 2 males living in the same cage.
Buy your pet mouse.
