Mouse Pregnancy Information

A pregnant mouse should be fed foods at are free of dyes and preservatives. Lab pellets are the best food for a pregnant mouse. The pellets can be supplemented with oats, tofu and vegetables. Female mice can be kept together if one of them is pregnant, as female mice will help each other with the babies. Male mice should be housed apart from pregnant females so that they do not get the female mice pregnant again too soon.
  1. Length

    • The average mouse pregnancy lasts for 17 to 22 days.

    Litter Size

    • Mouse litters will contain four to 12 babies. A single female mouse can have up to eight litters per year.

    Heat Cycles

    • A female mouse goes into heat every four to five days. However, if there are no male mice living in a colony, the female mice will stop going into heat until a male mouse is introduced into the group.

    Recovery Time

    • Although captive mice should not be allowed to have back-to-back pregnancies, it is possible for a mouse to get pregnant again 14 to 28 hours after giving birth.

    Aging

    • Mice are able to reproduce up until the end of their lives, but is is not healthy for them to do so.
