What is virus made of?

A virus is not made of cells like living organisms. Instead, it is composed of an outer shell called a capsid made of proteins that encloses a core of genetic material, either DNA or RNA. The capsid protects the nucleic acid and helps the virus to enter host cells. Some viruses also have an outer envelope made of a lipid bilayer derived from the host cell membrane which helps with attachment and entry into the host cell.
