Is rabbit one of animals that chew the cud?

Rabbits are not cud-chewing animals. Cud chewing is a process where animals regurgitate and re-chew their food to extract more nutrients. This process requires a specialised digestive system with multiple stomachs.

Rabbits, however, are herbivores with a different digestive system. They possess a single-chambered stomach, a large caecum filled with beneficial bacteria, and a long small intestine. Instead of chewing the cud, rabbits rely on microbial fermentation in the caecum to break down plant matter. They eat various plant materials such as grasses, leaves, and vegetables, and extract nutrients through this digestive process.
