Why are Black bears called bears?

The term "bear" is derived from the Old English word "bera", which is thought to have originated from the Proto-Germanic word "beran". This word was used to refer to brown bears, which were common in Europe at the time. As Europeans encountered other species of bears, such as black bears and polar bears, they used the same word to describe them, adding modifiers to distinguish between the different species.
