What special skills must the baby rabbit have to learn in order survive on its own?

Rabbits are precocial, meaning they are born with their eyes open and a coat of fur, and are able to move around within a few hours of birth. They are also able to nurse and feed themselves within a few days.

Unlike other mammals the new born baby rabbits may not be able to learn any special survival skills from its parents. Baby rabbits are usually left alone in a burrow by their mothers who leave the den to forage at different times. However, in their mothers absence the baby rabbits are quite capable of defending themselves. Here are a few of the special skills rabbits have for self defense:

* Strong legs for jumping and kicking: Rabbits can run up to 35 miles per hour, and they can use their strong legs to kick predators if they are caught.

* Claws for scratching: Rabbits have sharp claws that they can use to scratch predators.

* Teeth for biting: Rabbits have sharp teeth that they can use to bite predators.

* Camouflage: Rabbits are brown or gray, which helps them blend into their surroundings and avoid being seen by predators.

* Excellent hearing: Rabbits can hear sounds up to four times higher in frequency than humans. This allows them to detect predators from a great distance.

* Keen sense of smell: Rabbits can also use their keen sense of smell to detect predators and danger.
