1. Observation:
* Breathing: Look for subtle movements of their tiny chests and bellies. Their breaths will be very shallow and fast.
* Movement: Observe their tiny ears, nose, or whiskers for any movement.
* Response to Touch: Gently and very briefly touch a paw or ear. A healthy baby rabbit should have a reflex response and move slightly.
2. Feeling for a Heartbeat:
* This is a bit more advanced and requires gentle handling.
* Using your index and middle finger, feel very gently on the side of the baby's chest, just below the front legs, for a faint, rapid heartbeat.
Important Notes:
* Don't disturb the nest: Only check on the babies occasionally and briefly. Frequent disturbances can stress the mother and cause her to abandon the nest.
* Warmth: The babies should be warm to the touch. If they feel cold, it could be a sign they aren't getting enough warmth from their mother.
* Cleanliness: The nest should be clean and dry.
* Mother's Presence: Make sure the mother rabbit is present and caring for the babies.
If you have any concerns about the health of the baby rabbits, contact a veterinarian or a rabbit rescue organization immediately.
