1. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): This is a common eye infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies. Symptoms include redness, swelling, discharge, and squinting.
2. Blocked Tear Ducts: Tears are normally drained through small ducts in the inner corner of the eye. If these ducts become blocked, tears can overflow and cause wet eyes.
3. Allergies: Just like humans, bunnies can have allergies to things like dust, pollen, and certain foods. Allergies can cause irritation and inflammation, leading to watery eyes.
4. Eye Injuries: If a bunny has sustained an injury to the eye, it can cause irritation, inflammation, and excessive tearing.
5. Dental Problems: Surprisingly, dental problems can sometimes lead to watery eyes. If a bunny's teeth are overgrown or misaligned, it can affect the tear ducts.
6. Entropion/Ectropion: These are conditions where the eyelids turn inwards (entropion) or outwards (ectropion) irritating the eye.
7. Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca): Although less common, dry eye can occur in rabbits. In this condition, the eyes don't produce enough lubrication, leading to dryness, irritation, and excess tearing.
It's important to note: Wet eyes can be a symptom of something serious. If you notice your bunny's eyes are wet or irritated, it's crucial to contact your veterinarian. They can diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
