How to Make Dwarf Rabbits Stop Chewing on Wires

Dwarf rabbits are a breed much smaller than normal rabbits. Easily litter trained and unobtrusive, they make ideal house pets. However, with their natural curiosity, it is important to "rabbit-proof" your home to keep your pets safe. Rabbits are used to nibbling roots underground, which explains why their instinct is to chew cables when they find them. It's vital to deal with stray wires to prevent injury to your rabbit caused by electrical burns, electrocution or even electrical fires.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap your wires with spiral cable wrap. Designed to be flexible, it prevents rabbits from chewing through yet still allows wires to be easily moved, making it ideal for cables you move often.

    • 2

Slit plastic tubing (used in fish tanks and available from aquarium stores) lengthwise with a blade and tuck loose wires inside.

    • 3

Place loose wires inside plastic wire concealers that attach securely to the base of walls. Though more time-consuming than other methods, wire concealers provide a more permanent and rabbit-proof solution.

    • 4

Run cables behind furniture. Make sure there is no way your rabbits can squeeze behind the furniture to chew on the cables.

    • 5

Mount wires high above the floor, out of reach of even the biggest dwarf rabbit.
