How to Lift a Rabbit

Rabbits are shy, nervous animals that do not typically enjoy being handled frequently. Since they are naturally prey animals, they are easily scared by objects above them. Rather than swooping down with both arms and scooping up your rabbit, approach it gently and give it time to become accustomed to your presence. It may take many attempts for a rabbit to become confident with your ability to hold it securely.

Instructions

    • 1

Coax the rabbit out into the open with a piece of food if it is in a cage.

    • 2

Use slow, small movements to approach the rabbit as they frighten easily. Place on hand on its head to reassure it and help keep it from fleeing.

    • 3

Place your other hand along its side and wait until the rabbit appears comfortable with your presence.

    • 4

Bend your upper body toward the rabbit slowly and move your hand from its side to underneath its chest.

    • 5

Move your other hand from its head to underneath its rear and scoop the rabbit up gently, but firmly.

    • 6

Hold the rabbit close to your body to keep it secure and comfortable. Place it sideways with its feet facing one of your shoulders. The hand and arm used to support its chest should also stretch across the rabbit's body. Place the thumb of this hand over the rabbit's shoulders, with the other fingers under its chest. With your other hand, press its hind feet securely against your body to prevent it from kicking out.
