How to Get a Rabbit to Open His Mouth

Pet rabbits should have their mouths checked by their owners on a monthly basis. Owners can check the mouth for teeth that are not getting ground down properly, teeth that are growing unevenly and any other problems that might occur in a rabbit's mouth. Owners who check their rabbits' mouths on a regular basis can quickly alert the veterinarian if they spot something that has changed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the rabbit from its cage and sit down somewhere comfortable with the rabbit on your lap. Positioning the rabbit on your lap gives you greater access to the rabbit's mouth, and the rabbit will not be able to move away as it would in the cage.

    • 2

Hold the rabbit down with one arm and talk to the rabbit soothingly. Move your other hand so it is above the rabbit's eyes and then use your pointer finger and your thumb to lift back on the rabbit's mouth and reveal its teeth.

    • 3

Apply pressure with your pointer finger and your thumb until the rabbit's mouth opens. Placing your hand in this position prevents the rabbit from being able to bite you. Adjust the rabbit in your lap with the arm that is holding on to the rabbit if the rabbit tries to squirm away.
