The Care of Lionhead Rabbits

Lionhead rabbits are a fairly new rabbit breed. The first animal came to the U.S. in 1999. The rabbits are known for their long fur. Both the males and females have a mane of fur encircling their heads much like a male African lion. They also have a gentle disposition in general so caring for them is easier than caring for other rabbit breeds that are more aggressive. Lionhead rabbits are cared for in a similar way as short-haired rabbits, and are not as high maintenance as other long-haired bunny breeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Put a water bottle in your rabbit's cage. The animal should have access to food and water at all times. Also place a food dish in the cage. Each rabbit should be fed 1 oz. of food for every pound the rabbit weighs. Feed the rabbits Timothy hay and pellets. It's OK to occasionally feed older rabbits lettuce, grass and fruit slices as a treat.

    • 2

Comb the rabbit at least once a week so its fur does not become matted.

    • 3

Place the rabbits together in hutches, but do not place two male rabbits together. The rabbits are social animals that only need to be separated while in heat. Make sure the hutch is in a cool place out of direct sun. A hutch that's raised off the ground to let waste fall to the ground will help keep the rabbits clean.

    • 4

Give the rabbit chew toys. The lionhead rabbit's teeth grow to be large. Chew toys will control the length.

    • 5

Take the rabbit to the vet if it appears sick. If the bunny seems to have an upset stomach, feed it oatmeal and water for a few days.
