How to Keep My Rabbit From Shedding

Rabbits shed around every three months. While it may appear that your rabbit sheds all the time, the loose hair remains on the rabbit if you do not take the time to groom the creature properly. Rabbits are prone to hairballs, but they cannot throw them up when too much hair forms in the stomach. The tangled hair can make your rabbit uncomfortable and even result in blockages. Remove the excess fur and groom your rabbit often to help keep it from shedding as much.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the rabbit fur weekly with a wire brush or small fine-tooth comb to remove the loose fur. Brush the rabbit daily when the heavy shedding begins.

    • 2

Dampen your hands with water if you do not have a brush. Rub your hands over the front of the fur and then rub the fur backwards over the entire length of the body. Rub your hands together and discard the fur. Continue the process until you remove most of the loose fur.

Trim the fur on long hair rabbits to 1 inch or less with scissors. This prevents the rabbit from shedding a lot and it helps reduce hairballs.
