How to Make a Rabbit Cage or Habitat

Rabbits can be kept as pets, but they do require a certain habitat to thrive. While some rabbits may do just fine in a cage, most rabbits need a space that is large enough that they can run around. Rabbits also like to hide, though, so there should be a small, enclosed space provided for the rabbit to do so. Ultimately, the most important aspect of a rabbit habitat is that it makes the rabbit feel protected and comfortable.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a piece of linoleum that will fit inside the small animal exercise pen. Place it on the ground. Linoleum is easy to clean and safe for rabbits.

    • 2

Place the small animal exercise pen, which consists of walls of a certain height and no base, over the piece of linoleum. The exercise pen can be any size of your choice, but it is best that the pen be at least four times the size of the rabbit.

    • 3

Place a litterbox in the corner of the pen. Fill it with grass hay. Rabbits can be trained to use this portion of their pen as a bathroom.

    • 4

Flip a cardboard box upside down. Cut multiple holes in the sides of the box that are near the ground, so that the rabbit can walk through them and into the box. Rabbits like to have a small, enclosed space where they can go. It offers them a sense of protection, which rabbits need.

    • 5

Add a rabbit water bottle to the side of the pen. Ensure that it is always filled with clean water.

    • 6

Add a few sticks from outside for the rabbit to chew on and play with.
