How to Set Up a Mister for Rabbits

Rabbit's are sensitive to heat. They can become ill and die at temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. While it is recommended that pet rabbits be kept indoors due to heat related health issues, a mister will provide a measure of comfort for an outdoor rabbit. Automatic misters are available at local pet stores and online. The timed misting systems can lower the temperature of a rabbit cage up to 30 degrees.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a misting system rated for the size of your cage. If it's a small cage, you only need a short hose to fit around the outside of the cage. Too much water can make the rabbit uncomfortable and can get food too wet.

Attach the misting hose to the cage using the clips provided in the kit.

    • 3

Attach the hose to the water faucet and screw the other end into the mister.

    • 4

Turn the water to a comfortable misting pressure. The systems that come with automatic timers turn the water on at set intervals. There are solar powered and battery operated timers that attach to an established misting system as well. If you are turning it on and off yourself, set a timer to remind you to turn it off so the rabbit doesn't get water-logged.

Change the food in the cage daily if using a mister. Wet food grows bacteria and mold quickly in the heat and will make a rabbit sick.
