How to Keep Rabbits From Nipping People

When shopping for a family pet it is easy to fall for that cute bunny at the pet shop. Once you get the rabbit home, however, you may discover the pet that behaves much differently than it did in the pet store. Rabbits show aggression with their claws and teeth, nipping at your hands or biting your ankles when you enter the room. Do not label the rabbit as mean or unfriendly. The bad behavior is just that, behavior, that can be changed. A rabbit owner can tame their rabbit using behavior modification techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the rabbit checked by a vet to be sure that he's otherwise healthy. Some aggressive behavior is the result of a physical problem like mites or a burr.

    • 2

Get the rabbit spayed or neutered. This tames the hormones of the rabbit and makes it generally more docile and less hyperactive.

    • 3

Look for a pattern to your rabbit's aggression. Some rabbits show aggression only when you go for their litter-box or food. Others react to any movement by people. Discovering the rabbit's trigger will make it easier to work with.

    • 4

Do not react to the bite. If the rabbit just pinches your hand and does not draw blood try not to jerk it away. If the rabbit does not get its desired reaction it will give up.

    • 5

Keep your hands away from the rabbit's face. The rabbit may see your approaching hand as aggression and react accordingly. Gently stroke the rabbit on the top of the head instead.

    • 6

Do not force the rabbit out of its cage. Rather than grabbing the rabbit and pulling him out to hold, just open the door and let him come out on his own. Get down on the floor and hold a treat in your hand to coax him out of his cage.

    • 7

Place food in different locations including your hand. The rabbit will not want to attack your hand if she associates that hand with food. When food is placed in different places she will believe that there is more than enough food and will be less protective.
