How to Groom a Bunny

Groom your rabbit regularly to keep it clean and healthy. Long-haired rabbits, such as the angora require grooming on a daily basis to keep the coat in good condition. Your rabbit's hair can pick up dirt and it can also become matted, which can cause discomfort. If your rabbit has long hair and does not enjoy being groomed you can take it to a professional groomer to have its hair cut shorter. This makes its coat more manageable and will help to keep your pet cooler in warm weather.

Brush your rabbit's coat all over with a specialized cat grooming brush. Be gentle because your rabbit has extremely delicate skin. If you have a long-haired rabbit tease out any mats carefully by starting at the tips of the fur and working your way down to the roots.

Cut any stubborn mats off of a long-haired rabbit's coat, using hair cutting scissors. Avoid cutting into the rabbits skin by sectioning the hair between the first two fingers of one hand. Place your fingers between the rabbit's skin and the scissors and cut along the top of your fingers. Be extremely careful when cutting your rabbit's hair, especially around the tail. If you are not confident, make an appointment for your rabbit to see a professional pet groomer.

Sit down and turn the rabbit onto its back, hold it on your knee and support its head in the crook of one arm. Clean its genitals with a wash cloth dipped in tepid water to remove any droppings that are stuck there. It is important to keep your rabbit's genitals clean to prevent it from developing fly strike, which can be fatal.
