How to Build an NIC Rabbit Cage

Most rabbit cages sold in pet stores are unsuitable for adult rabbits. Rabbits need a great deal of space, and should have enough room to stand up on their heels, lay down and run around in their enclosures. While cages that meet this description do exist, they are heavy, expensive, and inflexibly designed. One solution for rabbit owners is to build a cage themselves using neat idea cubes (NICs), 12-inch wire mesh squares originally designed as shelving units.

Things You'll Need

  • 20 neat idea cubes
  • 54 zip ties
  • 3 medium alligator clips
  • 3-by-2 foot plywood rectangle

      Lay the neat idea cubes out on the floor. Arrange the squares into a 10-cube-by-2-cube rectangle, with the edges of the cubes touching.

      Attach the cubes together with zip ties. Use three zip ties at each join where two cubes meet. Cinch the ties closed, but allow the ties a tiny amount of slack so the cubes move freely against one another.

      Stand the rectangle up, and form the flat sheet into a rectangle two cubes wide and three cubes long. The top and bottom will be uncovered.

      Clip the loose ends of the rectangle together with the alligator clips. This corner will serve as the door to the cage.

      Lower the plywood carefully to the bottom of the enclosure. This board forms the floor of the cage and can be removed or replaced for easy cleaning.
