How to Build an Outdoor Rabbit Pen

Building an outdoor rabbit pen is a great way to provide a safe environment for domesticated rabbits outside of a house. An outdoor pen will also give rabbits the opportunity to exercise and live in a bigger space than many indoor pens can provide. A balance between indoor and outdoor living is good for domestic rabbits.

Choose a good location. It needs to be an area where rabbits will have plenty of shade and be protected from predators and the elements. It also helps if you have an old shelter inside the pen already, such as a dog house or a little shed. This will give a rabbit an extra sense of security and shelter from the rain.

Purchase chicken wire with holes too small for rabbits to get their heads stuck in. Steel is normally the best material to use. Chicken wire can be purchased at any farm supply store. Add up the sizes of the pen sides and floor space to make sure enough chicken wire is purchased.

Place a metal fencing stake at each corner of the pen. Pound the metal stakes into the ground and make sure they are secure. Use large zip ties to secure the chicken wire fencing to the first corner stake. Roll out the fencing around the other three stakes and back to the first stake. Go back to pole two and pull the fencing as tight as possible. Use zip ties to secure it and continue on to the next stake. Repeat the process for all four stakes.

Trim the extra fencing off with wire cutters when you get to the first pole again. Lay the chicken wire down inside the cage to create a floor. Use cage clips to attach the floor chicken wire to the chicken wire that is standing up. Make sure that the floor and walls are secure and properly clamped.

Fill the rabbit pen with the necessary materials. This is going to include areas for water, food and litter. Put some rabbit toys in the pen.
