How to Keep a Wild Bunny

Keeping wild animals of any kind as pets is not only a bad idea, it is also illegal. Wild rabbits can carry diseases and parasites that are harmful to humans. Wild rabbits are not bred for captivity. They are aggressive and trying to keep them in a cage will only traumatize them. If you want to experience wild rabbits, the best way is to watch them in your yard. You can leave carrots for them that they may eat, but wild rabbits get all they need from the environment in which they live. If you find a rabbit nest and you aren't sure the babies are cared for, there are things you can do.

Instructions

    • 1

Place sticks or strings over the top of the nest. If the mother returns she will disturb the sticks and you will know the babies are cared for. Do not touch the baby rabbits.

    • 2

Walk by the nest in a day or two to check on your sticks. If the sticks are still where you left them after a couple days, look at the bunnies. If they have a white stripe on their head they are too young to fend for themselves, but if they are brown then they can be left alone.

Call your local wildlife center if you have seen no signs of the mother, and the babies are too young to be left alone. They can tell you what steps you can take to protect the rabbits until someone can assist you.
