How to Breed Angora Rabbits

Angora rabbits are ready to breed between the ages of 5 to 6 months. According to the American Rabbit Breeders Association breed cycles can range from as few as 11 days after kindling (giving birth) to as many as 42 days. An angora doe's first litter must be born before she reaches 1 year old; If not bred by then, the doe's pelvic bones will fuse and she will not be able to give birth naturally. Angora does can breed until 3 years of age.

Instructions

    • 1

Pluck or clip the doe before breeding. Giant and Satin breeds do better with shearing than plucking. Examine the buck's genitalia to ensure it is not wool-bound.

    • 2

Ensure the doe is receptive to breeding by checking her vent. It should look bright pink and swollen. If the vent is not in this condition she may not accept breeding. Check daily before taking her to the buck.

    • 3

Place the doe into the buck's cage. Monitor the breeding by watching carefully --- it can occur very quickly. The buck will attempt to mount the doe as soon as she enters the cage. After mounting and executing rapid movements, the buck falls backwards or over to the side. This indicates that the breeding is complete.

    • 4

Perform restrained breeding if the doe runs away from the buck. Place one hand on the doe's shoulders securing her ears under the grip. Place the other hand underneath the doe with the palm up. Gently use your fingers to push the vent upwards causing the tail to lift and creating easy access for the buck. Grip the doe firmly to prevent struggle and injury. The buck will mount the doe and complete the process.

    • 5

Return the doe to her own cage.

    • 6

Return the doe to the buck's cage and perform the breeding again that night to ensure success.
