How to Breed Rabbits for Beginners

Rabbits are famous for breeding often and producing many young; pet rabbits are no different from their wild cousins. Breeding rabbits is a simple task, but before moving forward, make sure that you have the resources to care for the young and homes for all of them. Choose parents that are healthy and have good temperaments and take both parents to the veterinarian prior to breeding to ensure they are in good condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the female rabbit in the male rabbit's pen. Placing the male rabbit in the female rabbit's pen may result in territory disputes rather than mating.

    • 2

Watch the rabbits closely. The rabbits may circle each other for a few moments, but typically, the male mounts the female within minutes. It may take several tries for the male to mount the female, and the female may even mount the male.

    • 3

Flip the female rabbit's feet back so that she cannot hurt the buck and hold her still for a few minutes if she is reluctant to allow the male to mount or if the male has problems mounting.

    • 4

Watch the buck carefully -- he may fall off the doe and to the side after a successful connection, so be sure to catch him if the buck and doe are on a raised surface.

    • 5

Check the doe's vent by looking at the opening between her hind legs. The opening towards the tail is her anus and the other opening is her vent. After a successful breeding, the doe's vent is wet.

    • 6

Repeat the process a few hours later to ensure that the breeding is successful.

    • 7

Return the rabbits to their separate pens.
