How to Feed a Lionhead Rabbit

The fluffy lionhead rabbit has long fur giving it a "lion-like" appearance, thus the name; their curiosity and affectionate personalities add to their popularity as pets. Feeding your lionhead is no different from feeding other breeds of pet rabbits; they need quality rabbit pellets, timothy hay and occasional snacks if they're over 4 months old. To feed, you'll need either a dish or a side bin; the side bin hooks to the side of the cage and works like a hopper; you put the food in the top, it slides to the bottom and the rabbits can't soil it as easily with their waste.

Things You'll Need

  • Side bin
  • Hay rack or similar item to put hay in (toys are available to put the hay in and also use as entertainment)

Instructions

    • 1

Attach your side bin to the side of the cage. Most have two hooks that will fit over the bars of the cage.

    • 2

Pour high-quality rabbit pellets into the top of the bin. Pellets should have a protein level of 16 percent or lower and be formulated from all-natural ingredients.

    • 3

Place the timothy hay in a hay rack or a hay-toy of your choice. Keep hay off the bottom of the cage as it can get wrapped into the lionhead's long fur and cause mats.

    • 4

Feed your lionhead (over 4 months old) dandelions, a 1/2-inch slice of banana, a small piece of apple or raisins as treats.

    • 5

Provide a water bottle with clean, fresh water available at all times.
