How to Help the Smell of Rabbit Pee

Rabbit urine has a strong ammonia smell that can be unbearable, especially indoors. Whether your rabbit uses a litter box or a tray in the rabbit cage, to help keep the urine odor under control, good, regular cleaning habits are necessary. Note that rabbits that are not neutered produce urine with a stronger smell than those rabbits that are neutered.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep an exhaust fan going near the cage or box to help get rid of the smell. In a rabbit house, use fans, preferably underneath the cages, to dissipate the smell.

    • 2

Rinse the litter box or tray with water after each change. Ideally, you should change the litter every day. Lining the bottom of the box or tray with newspaper first makes throwing out the litter easier. Discard the litter in plastic bags and place them outside in a sealed garbage bin.

    • 3

Wash the box or tray one to two times a week with white vinegar or bleach. This will help get rid of any urine and smell that may have accumulated. Rinse the box or tray thoroughly before putting it back.

    • 4

Clean around the box or cage one to two times a week using a sponge moistened with vinegar or bleach. This will help clean up any urine that may have spilled down the side of the box or cage or on the floor.
