What Do Rabbits Prefer to Eat?

Rabbits are soft, furry animals that will make great pets if they are cared for properly. There are many responsibilities that go along with owning a pet rabbit, and it is important to get a book or guide to do some reading before owning one. Just like any other animal they require exercise, attention and a healthy diet. Most rabbits even enjoy to eat the same healthy snacks that you do.
  1. Fruit

    • Rabbits enjoy fruit just as humans enjoy a sweet dessert or candy. Fruits like apples or bananas are great for rabbits, but be sure to only serve fruit in moderation. Although fruits have many vital nutrients they are also very high in sugar, and too much will be harmful to a rabbit. Give fruit sparingly and use it as a reward for training purposes.

    Vegetables

    • Vegetables are a favorite of rabbits, but there are some rules that should be followed. Always try to feed your rabbit organic vegetables and wash them thoroughly. Try to feed your rabbit three servings of vegetables every day, and to give them a variety. Great choices are carrot tops, romaine lettuce, chopped celery, broccoli, radish tops and mustard greens. Vegetables to avoid are peas, potatoes and pennyroyal mint.

    Timothy Hay

    • Hay is an important part of a rabbit's diet, and they love to eat it. There are many other health benefits with timothy hay as well, like wearing down the constantly growing teeth in a rabbit's mouth and providing the rabbit with fiber. Rabbits also like rearranging the hay back and forth around their cages, and this gives them something to do.

    Pellets

    • Although this may not be their favorite thing to eat, most rabbits still enjoy eating pellets that are specially designed to provide them with the nutrients that they need to grow and stay healthy. There are many different brands to choose from, and you may have to try a couple before you find the ones that your rabbit likes best.
