How to Water Rabbits

Water is one of the most important things that you can give a rabbit, and your pet needs water every single day. Without it, rabbits can dehydrate and possibly develop intestinal problems that can be fatal. Ensuring a rabbit gets all of the clean water that it needs is easy to do, and there are different options to use.

Place a water bottle filled with clean fresh water on the side of the rabbit's tank or cage every morning, along with a dish of water. Rabbits will drink more out of a dish than a bottle, but if the dish runs empty you want the rabbit to have another source of water available. Be sure the items are lead free, and that the material can't be chewed or ingested.

Check the water throughout the day or in the evening to be sure the rabbit is drinking. If the the water has any bedding or food in it, then the water should be changed. Rinse out the dish or bottle and then refill with fresh water. Avoid using harmful chemicals or soaps that could hurt the rabbit.

Wash the bowls and water bottles once a week with a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar, using a single part vinegar to three parts water. The vinegar is a natural astringent and will work to kill any bacteria that can form in the water containers. Rinse thoroughly and allow the container to dry before placing it back into the cage.

Test the house or tap water occasionally to make sure that it is safe for a rabbit to drink and that there isn't too much lead. This will prevent the rabbit from getting sick. If the water isn't acceptable for the animal, give it bottled water until you get a filter or until the problem is fixed.
