How to Remove Matted Hair on Rabbits

Rabbits have sensitive skin, so you'll have to leave the bottom portion of the matted hair on the rabbit and try to loosen the matted hair with a brush. This may require several grooming sessions. The Rabbit Care eBook recommends brushing long-haired rabbits every day and clipping their hair to about 1 inch to avoid matting. Short-haired rabbits shed their hair every three months. Much of the loose fur can be removed before matting by gently stroking the rabbit with a damp hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the rabbit's fur to loosen the hair and get rid of debris. Be gentle because the skin underneath is sensitive.

    • 2

Place the rabbit on your lap and cradle it. Grab your scissors and section out the matted hair between your index and middle fingers.

    • 3

Slice the matted section just above your fingers. Be careful not to pull the hair with the scissors. Don't slice lower than your fingers because the rabbit needs a small amount of fur to protect sensitive skin.

    • 4

Brush out the remaining matted hair gently with short, even strokes from tip to root. This may require a wide-toothed comb.
